Upgraditis – with a Cremina?

Yep, we’ve got single glazing. What’s a little early morning condensation anyway? We purchased our Cremina back in 2004. Since then the only upgrade we have added is the flat top plate which doubles as a cup warmer, albeit not quite hot enough in winter. Originally it had a cupped disk around the boiler filling cap, which meant there was insufficient space to sit cups on.

Eight years later and we take a look at how little has changed, other than a couple of minor upgrades that we hope to add in the next week.

Below is the drip tray on our Cremina. This design of drip tray was only a prototype we have subsequently learnt. The drip tray that is found on today’s production Cremina is superior in that you can lift the grate out to mop out the tray without having to remove the tray. This is not possible with the prototype design shown below.

And last but not least, the curious case of the upside down pressure-stat. Yes, that’s right, the adjustment screw is on the underside so you have to take the casing off every time you want to adjust the pressure stat. The current production model has addressed this issue with the addition of a ‘u-bend’ of copper pipe. This places the pressure stat with the adjustment screw facing upwards and higher up, meaning the casing does not have to come on and off. It also reduces the likelihood of condensation accumulating in the pressure stat. We’ve ordered the section of ‘u-bend’ copper pipe and are trying to remember why we didn’t do it years ago. As soon as we get it fitted we will post another picture to show you the difference in vivid colour!
